Moving From Cambridge to London: Costs, Timings & What to Expect

Cambridge to London is one of our most requested long-distance routes. On a clear day it's just over an hour up the M11 — but London adds complications that catch first-time movers off guard. This guide walks you through what to budget, how to time the move, and the small-print details (parking suspensions, ULEZ, low-traffic neighbourhoods) that can make or break a move-in day.

Typical costs

A studio or one-bed flat from Cambridge to Zone 2–3 typically lands between £600 and £950 including basic packing materials. A two-bed flat usually runs £900–£1,400. A three- or four-bed family home runs £1,800–£3,000+, sometimes more if the destination is inside the ULEZ or a low-traffic neighbourhood with restricted lorry access.

The variables are volume, access at both ends, parking suspension fees, packing services and whether the destination falls inside a ULEZ or low-traffic neighbourhood. A free survey gives you a fixed price — hourly quotes are rarely accurate for moves this long.

Plan around the M11

  • Avoid 7–10am and 4–7pm on weekdays — the M11 and M25 are unpredictable
  • Saturday mornings are often the smoothest slot
  • Allow extra time around the M25 junction at Waltham Abbey
  • Sunday moves can run into restricted-delivery streets in central London
  • Avoid moving in the week between Christmas and New Year — congestion is heavier than people expect

Parking is the real challenge

Most London boroughs require a parking suspension or dispensation for a removal lorry. These need to be applied for online a week or more in advance and cost £30–£80 per bay (Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea are at the higher end). We handle this for you as part of our long-distance service — it's one of the most common things that catches DIY movers out.

If you're moving into a flat above the third floor with no lift, raise it at the survey stage. Stair-carries from the truck add time and we'll factor in an extra pair of hands.

ULEZ and low-emission zones

Our fleet is ULEZ-compliant, so there are no surcharges to pass on to you. If you're hiring a smaller van yourself, check the vehicle's emissions rating before booking — non-compliant vehicles face a £12.50 daily charge inside the ULEZ and the larger LEZ charges for lorries can run to £100+ per day.

Some inner-London boroughs (Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Camden, Lewisham) operate low-traffic neighbourhoods with camera-enforced restrictions on through-traffic. We check this for every destination before the day.

Packing and timing

For Cambridge-to-London moves we strongly recommend full or part packing. A long-distance move with self-packed boxes is more vulnerable to damage than a local one because of the loading, unloading and possible storage in between. If your move is part of a chain with same-day completion in both cities, build in a half-day buffer.

Storage between properties

London completions slip more often than Cambridge ones — chains are longer and the buyer pool is more international. If there's any risk of a gap between move-out and move-in, ask about overnight or short-stay storage in our Cambridge facility. Loading the truck once and parking it overnight is cheaper and safer than a full unload-and-reload.

Make moving day calm

Travel with the essentials box, all documents, valuables and any pets in your own car. Leave the truck team to drive south on the schedule you've agreed. We'll keep you updated by phone if anything changes.
