Moving home in Cambridge involves far more than packing a few boxes and hiring a van. Between school catchments, narrow city-centre streets, council parking restrictions and the unpredictability of moving chains, even a local move can quickly become stressful without a proper plan.
At Hercules Movers we run hundreds of house removals across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire every year. Here is the exact checklist we share with our own customers to keep their move on time, on budget, and stress-free.
8 weeks before — book your survey
Book a free pre-move survey as soon as your move date is confirmed. A surveyor will assess volume, access, parking and any specialist items so you receive a fixed-price quote with no surprises on the day.
- Request quotes from at least two reputable Cambridge removals companies
- Confirm insurance cover (Goods in Transit and Public Liability)
- Ask whether weekends and end-of-month dates carry a surcharge
- Confirm what packing materials are included
6 weeks before — declutter every room
The single biggest way to reduce moving costs is to move less. Walk every room with three labelled bags or boxes: keep, donate, dispose. Cambridge has excellent charity shops on Mill Road, Burleigh Street and Cherry Hinton Road that will collect larger items.
4 weeks before — notify everyone
Update your address with Cambridge City Council (or your new authority), the DVLA, HMRC, your bank, GP, employer, insurers and the Electoral Roll. Arrange Royal Mail redirection for at least three months.
2 weeks before — packing & parking
- Start packing rooms you use least (lofts, spare rooms, garages)
- Label every box with destination room and a brief contents description
- Apply for a temporary parking dispensation from Cambridge City Council if your street has restrictions
- Confirm meter readings will be taken on moving day
Moving day — what good movers do
A professional Cambridge removals team will arrive with protective floor covering, blankets and trolleys, complete a walk-through with you, load by room priority, and reassemble furniture at the new property. Keep a clearly-labelled "essentials" box with kettle, mugs, chargers, medication and bedding in the car with you.
After the move
Test smoke alarms, locate the stopcock and consumer unit, photograph meter readings, and confirm broadband activation. Most importantly — leave the unpacking marathon for tomorrow. A good night's sleep is worth more than an organised kitchen.
